Lets take a second to talk about the basics…where will you be seeing clients and what vibe you want your office/practice to give. This foundation is set by two key factors: location and brand building.

Selecting A Location

Location. Location. Location.

We have heard it before and will hear it 1,000 times again. Picking the optimal location is going to determine what type of clients you see in your practice. What do I mean by this? Your location can heavily influence your prices, client demographic, and even accessibility.

For example, if you dream of working with a geriatric population, you are going to want to pick a location that has ample parking, lighting, and mobility accessibility.

Want to charge $500/session private pay? You need to pick an area that can afford that fee.

While a welcoming and comfortable office environment is important for clients, accessibility is also crucial regardless of your target population[and an ADA requirement]. Choosing a location with ample parking or access to public transportation can make it easier for clients to attend sessions regularly. Even small things like having an elevator, wheelchair ramp, and ADA friendly door knobs are important to consider when selecting an office space.

Yes, nobody wants to be slapped with an ADA fine, but more importantly, we want to be a good person. Therapy is hard enough without having to struggle to get into the building.

Maybe you want to include a private waiting area for clients to sit if they arrive early (and to consider scheduling time in between to prevent a crowed lobby). How can you make it HIPAA compliant to ensure clients feel their information is kept private? Does it look warm and inviting? Do YOU want to sit there or does it feel sterile and unapproachable? Remember, small details can make a huge difference. A small cup of coffee or mini fridge with water can help make nervous clients feel more welcome and comfortable. I know for me personally, both a as client and therapist having the option for virtual care was HUGE during my pregnancy when I was struggling with morning sickness. Sometimes having the “comforts of home” can set a therapeutic relationship up for success by building a deeper connection of trust and comfort.

Remember, it’s essential to create a professional and private virtual space that ensures confidentiality and fosters a sense of security for your clients. Make sure you select a virtual office that is private (i.e. NOT THE LIBRARY), sound protected (I like to use a white noise machine), and has a locked door…last thing you want is your toddler barging in on a session.
