Can I be honest with you?

I got into private practice for the lifestyle and financial freedom it brought me. Within one year of opening my doors, I was able to exceed my agency salary working only half the time. I was living the dream. But then I had a baby and my whole world changed. More than that, my definition of “freedom” changed.

I no longer wanted to spend the day in my office behind a computer screen doing 1:1 sessions all day. Instead I wanted to be home with my baby -- I wanted to be a mom first and foremost BUT I wasn't ready to give up my career (I worked too hard and too long to just drop it.) 

So I started dabbling with creating small digital products (note templates to be specific) and selling them on Etsy while my baby was sleeping.

AND TO MY SURPRISE, THEY SOLD THAT WEEK!

I started to notice that if I spent 1-2 hrs. a day on creating/marketing these products, I was able to make a decent chunk of change. Over the past year I started experimenting with different types of digital products: more templates, some courses, and live workshops to see what would sell and more importantly, what was worth my invested time. 

Now today, I have the freedom to spend my days at home with my daughter and work about 10 hours a week, with only six 1:1 clinical hours a month. How do I spent the rest of my working hours? I maximize those pockets of time between baby naps and family activities, to market my products using my laptop and phone. 

Full transparency, I am not the sole income earner for my household (nor was I ever), but by incorporating digital product into private practice I have been able to significantly cut my hours (and all insurance panels) AND still pay my portion of the household bills with few interruptions.

    I am looking at this topic specifically from the lens of a mental health professional and what needs to be done to protect the license. Maintaining ethics and professional integrity are my top priorities when it comes to this topic. We spent way to much time and money to put ourselves through school and licensing boards to throw it away for a $7 digital product.

    I actively run and operate my own clinical private practice and non-clinical coaching businesses on a daily basis. Because of this, I am active in this community and will be teaching the exact methods I used to get my digital products up and running.
  • Do I need to purchase anything else to get my digital product up and running?
    This answer depends a lot on what type of digital product you are creating but for reference, I started out using Word, Excel and Google Docs (all free versions). Many of my products are still created using these tools.

    For e-books and images I use Canva. A ton can be done on the free plan of Canva, however I upgraded to Canva Pro (paid) for the time savings it provided.

    If you plan on doing webinars/digital courses, you will need to host your videos somewhere. YouTube is a free option, but I use and love ThriveCart (paid).

  • Is it actually profitable? I'm just not sure if it would be worth it.
    Generating "passive income" may seem like an easy way to make money, but it actually requires a significant amount of effort. It involves creating a product before any sales, followed by continuous promotion. However, the advantage is that you can work at your own pace and on your own schedule, which is not always possible with face-to-face therapy sessions. Although it is not a "get rich quick" type of program, it has been a profitable endeavor for me, and that's why I am investing time and energy to teach others as well. Just be aware that effort is required.

    This is the exact reason why a digital product is a great place to start. The point of developing a passive income stream is to free up some time while your investments work for you in the background of your day. Similar to stocks in the stock market, you will spend some time picking and monitoring your stocks but generally speaking the market does what it does in the background. The same goes for your digital product. By creating a product that your audience wants and needs and spending some time marketing it, you will be able to create a revenue source that does not need your primary attention.
  • How much time will I need to create a digital product?
    Depends on the product.

    When I first created my note template it took me about 4 hours to create and set everything up in Etsy. Then I spent 10-15 minutes a day promoting.

    Generally speaking larger priced items (like a digital course) will take longer to create and longer to sell because the higher the price tag the more nurturing an audience will need before they develop the trust and confidence to buy.
  • I'm worried that the webinar will be too short to cover all my needs.
    I have carefully timed the webinar to ensure that it's long enough to cover all the important topics, but short enough to keep participants engaged. This is a foundational course, meaning I will be covering the basics to get you started with a small digital product.
