The Quick Details on a TikToc Ban

Disclaimer: I am not a political guru or TikTok expert, this is a quick summary of the research I have compiled. I have done my best to keep it as accurate and factual as possible. Please do your own due diligence on research.

Impact on Small Businesses (includes but not limited to private therapy practices and other mental health based therapy businesses):

  • Revenue Losses: TikTok estimates that small businesses could collectively lose over $1 billion in revenue within a single month if the ban is implemented. Source: AP News
  • Marketing Challenges: Many small businesses have leveraged TikTok’s unique algorithm and vast user base to reach new audiences cost-effectively. A ban would force these businesses to seek alternative platforms, potentially increasing marketing expenses and reducing outreach effectiveness. Source: Forbes
  • Operational Disruptions: Businesses that rely on TikTok for customer engagement and sales may face operational hurdles, including the need to rebuild their online presence elsewhere and reestablish customer relationships. Source: Entrepreneur

Legal and Political Context:

  • Supreme Court Deliberations: The U.S. Supreme Court is currently deliberating on a law that would require ByteDance, TikTok’s China-based parent company, to divest from the app or face a ban, citing national security concerns. The outcome of this case will determine TikTok’s future availability in the U.S. Source: AP News
  • Government Stance: The U.S. government argues that the ban is necessary to protect national security, while TikTok contends that such a move would infringe upon First Amendment rights and harm millions of American users and businesses. Source: Them

Considerations for Business Owners:

  • Diversification: Therapy businesses heavily reliant on TikTok should consider diversifying their digital marketing efforts across multiple platforms to mitigate potential disruptions.
  • Contingency Planning: Developing contingency plans, including exploring alternative social media channels and direct marketing strategies, can help maintain customer engagement if the ban proceeds.
  • Stay Informed: Therapy business owners should monitor legal developments and be prepared to adapt to changes in the digital marketing landscape resulting from the Supreme Court’s decision.

In summary, the impending TikTok ban presents substantial challenges for U.S. business owners (therapist and non therapists alike), especially small enterprises that have come to depend on the platform for growth and customer engagement. Proactive measures and strategic planning are essential to navigate this uncertain landscape.

Building Your Business on Borrowed Land

Have you ever heard the phrase “building your house on borrowed land”? It’s a cautionary reminder that relying entirely on platforms you don’t own—like TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook—to grow your business is risky.

Sure, these platforms are incredible for visibility and engagement. They help you connect with your audience, build your brand, and generate leads. But here’s the catch: you don’t own them.

At any moment, an algorithm can change, drastically reducing your reach. A ban or legal restriction—like what’s being discussed with TikTok—could wipe out your access to the platform entirely. Worst case scenario? The platform itself could disappear overnight, taking your carefully nurtured audience with it.

Does anyone else remember the Instagram glitch of 2024? I personally had hours of work disappear overnight which is horrifying. Luckily it came back online eventually, but this is never guaranteed or predictable in scheduling.

For businesses that have poured time, energy, and money into growing their presence on social media, this is a real concern. You’re essentially building on borrowed land, which means your hard work can be undone by forces completely outside of your control.

Why Owning Your Platform Matters

This is why I’m such a huge advocate for blogging. When you blog, you’re creating content on a platform that you own: your website. It’s your digital home base, a space where you call the shots. Married with email marketing, I can communicate with my audience anywhere anytime no mater what the social media gods plan to do that day.

Unlike social media platforms, a blog doesn’t depend on algorithms to determine who sees your content. You’re not at the mercy of sudden changes or bans. Everything you publish stays under your control—and stays accessible to your audience.

Even other powerful content platforms, like YouTube and podcasts, don’t offer the same level of ownership. Yes, they’re great tools for expanding your reach, but ultimately, they’re hosted on platforms owned by someone else. If the rules change or the platform disappears, your content is still at risk.

With a blog, you’re in charge. You decide how your content looks, how it’s organized, and how it connects to your audience. It’s a long-term investment in your business, and it ensures that no matter what happens to social media platforms, you have a solid foundation that can’t be taken away.

The Benefits of Blogging for Business Growth

Blogging isn’t just about owning your platform—it’s also a powerful way to grow your business. Here’s why:

  1. Improved SEO and Discoverability
Blogs help your website rank higher on search engines like Google, making it easier for potential clients to find you. Unlike social media posts, which have a short lifespan, blog content continues to drive traffic long after it’s published. Read more in my post: What is SEO? When you consistently publish valuable content, you position yourself as an expert in your niche. Your blog becomes a go-to resource for your audience, building trust and credibility over time. 4. Supporting Other Marketing Efforts
Your blog acts as a central hub for all your marketing. It’s where you can direct traffic from social media, email campaigns, or paid ads. It’s also a great way to repurpose content—turn a blog post into a podcast episode, a YouTube video, or a series of social media posts. Need ideas on what this can look like? 5. Longevity and Ownership
Unlike social media content, which can get buried in feeds or disappear entirely, blog posts have staying power. If you’ve been relying solely on social media, it’s time to rethink your strategy and make blogging a core part of your marketing efforts. Here are some tips to get started:

  • Focus on Your Audience’s Needs: Write blog posts that address the questions and challenges your audience cares about most.
  • Optimize for SEO: Use keywords strategically to help your blog rank higher on search engines.
  • Repurpose Content: Take topics you’ve covered on social media or in videos and expand them into blog posts.
  • Promote Your Blog: Share your posts on social media, include links in your email newsletters, and encourage readers to share your content.
