Hi everyone, this is Alex from Stressless Therapist. If you’re not familiar with me, I am a small business coach who has a background in psychotherapy and a passion for content marketing. My goal in life is to help as many therapists as I can start, build, and grow the private practice of their dreams so they can build a life centered around their personal values and, basically, freedom – being able to do what’s most important to them.

I like to pop on to YouTube every now and then to answer some questions that people submit to me. These are questions that oftentimes I might hear in the Facebook group that I run, or that people will email me directly, and because I think they’re helpful for other people, I want to make sure that it reaches a large amount of audience, hence the YouTube channel.

So, a question that came across my path that I was really intrigued by, and I think a lot of people don’t know about, is what do you do if you want to temporarily close your practice for a bit? This could come for a wide variety of reasons. You could be going on maternity leave, like what I did.

You could just need a break, maybe you’re feeling burnt out and you need to step away for a bit. Maybe you’re pivoting completely and are looking to go in a different direction, or you’re looking to retire. Regardless of whatever your decision is, it’s your decision and you have the right to it. You shouldn’t have to feel like you’re enslaved to your business.

Some things to keep in mind, though, before you close your doors are: how are your clients, past and present, going to reach out to you if they have a question? More specifically, if they have a question regarding accessing a new therapist or getting access to their records, that needs to be set in place and have a clear protocol. And making sure that your both present and past clients have that information.

You also probably want to reach out to your malpractice, as well as licensing board, to let them know. I know at least from a social work perspective, it’s actually in our regulations that says if you are looking to close your business for more than three months of time, that the state board needs to know.

And again, mostly it’s for that client record reasoning. So, make sure you have a letter written and reach out to them. This way, they’re aware so you keep compliance. It’s a small question, but it’s a big question, and it’s something that unless you do it, not many people realize that it’s needed to be done.

So hopefully, this helps you if this is something that you’re considering for yourself. If this kind of tidbit of information is something that you’re looking to get more of, one for sure kind of like and subscribe this video so you get updates when they come up.
