How to market a support group?

Marketing a support group is similar to marketing individual therapy, with one key difference: you need a larger number of clients to fill those spots. However, the core strategy remains the same—highlighting your unique skills as a therapist and showing how you can help clients achieve their goals or overcome challenges.

Many therapists hesitate to niche down, worrying it will limit their reach. But the truth is, narrowing your focus is often the secret weapon for attracting the right clients. Think of it like the difference between Disney Channel and MTV in the 2000s—each catered to a specific audience and used their unique strengths to dominate their niche.

With group therapy, you need to get even more eyes on your services than you would for individual therapy. This means having a strong online presence is essential, but that’s not all. Networking with other therapists who work with similar populations can be a goldmine. Remember, the group work you do can complement the individual work your colleagues are providing to their clients.

Additionally, don’t overlook the value of connecting with complementary professionals such as doctors, chiropractors, nutritionists, and other holistic practitioners. If your group focuses on areas like anxiety management or stress relief, these professionals may have clients who could benefit from participating in your group.

And of course, amping up your social media game and optimizing your SEO are critical steps if you have a group that runs on an evergreen basis or “open”—meaning it’s always open and available to new clients. You want to make sure you’re constantly drawing in new clients without having to manually promote the group every single time. This is where I love maximizing my blog posts and email marketing to make sure that interested parties are always seeing what I have to offer.

Bottom line: Marketing a support group is all about refining your message, building connections, and making sure your ideal clients can find you—whether that’s through referrals, social media, or Google searches.

Why Numbers Matter: Understanding Conversion Rates and Tracking Data for Group Therapy Marketing

When marketing support groups, the numbers become even more crucial. Unlike individual therapy, where you might only need one or two clients, group therapy requires a larger volume of people to be successful. Conversion rates in general marketing are typically around 1-2%, but when marketing groups, you’ll need to aim for a bigger pool to ensure you fill those spots.

Let’s break this down: In marketing, the average conversion rate across industries is typically around 1-2%. This means that out of every 100 people who see your offer, only 1 or 2 will become clients. So, if your goal is to fill a group with 10 participants, you’ll need at least 1,000 people to view your group’s information to reach that goal.

But how do you track what’s working and ensure your marketing is converting? That’s where tracking your data comes in. When you measure the success of your marketing efforts—whether it’s website visits, lead magnet downloads, or email open rates—you can identify which strategies are driving the most interest in your group.

As a marketing coach for therapists, I help my clients track their data so they can optimize their strategies and see what’s bringing in the most leads. For example, I show them how to measure which social media platforms, blog posts, or ads are driving the most traffic and engagement, and then guide them to refine their approach. Whether it’s improving your SEO, optimizing your email marketing, or increasing your social media presence, tracking the numbers gives you the insight you need to maximize your marketing efforts.

The goal is to continually refine your approach based on the data, increasing your reach and ensuring your group is filled with the right clients. If you’re ready to start tracking your data and optimizing your strategy to fill your therapy groups faster, I can help. Let’s work together to build a plan that ensures you’re getting the numbers you need for group success.
