Blogging for Beginners: The Most Frequently Asked Questions Explained

Blogging for Beginners Q1: “What Is Blogging?“
Blogging is a form of marketing where writers use articles—also known as blog posts—to share educational, entertaining, or sales-related content about a product or service they’re promoting.
I love blogging because it’s something I fully own on my own website, and I can easily go back and edit it at any time. Unlike other long-form content like podcasts or YouTube videos, which often need to be recorded in one take and have limited editing options, blog posts can be updated and revised without starting from scratch.

Blogging for Beginners Q2: “How Can a Beginner Start Blogging?“
If you’re a beginner therapist looking to start blogging, I recommend keeping it simple. First, ensure your website can host a blog. If you need recommendations on the software I use, check out my posts on Lyrical Host.
Next, create a list of potential blog topics using a Google Doc. Choose the top three topics that are most likely to attract your ideal audience, then draft a blog post of at least 1,000 words on one of them.
To maximize your reach, research keywords to improve your SEO. If you need guidance on selecting the right keywords and analyzing which blog posts generate the most traffic, reach out—I’d love to help through my coaching services!
Blogging for Beginners Q3: “Do Bloggers Get Paid Money?“
Yes, bloggers often earn money by promoting a product or service. Most blog posts include a call to action, encouraging readers to explore a featured service or product—for example, a book, course, or therapy session.

Blogging for Beginners Q4: “How to Start a Blog and Make Money?”
The easiest way to start making money with blogging is through affiliate marketing. This involves promoting someone else’s products or services and earning a commission when a sale is made.
What I love about affiliate marketing is that I don’t have to worry about product development or customer service—my sole job is marketing and promoting products I believe are helpful.
However, it’s crucial to only promote products you know and trust because your reputation matters greatly in affiliate marketing.
Affiliate Partnership Disclosure
Some links on this website are affiliate links, meaning I may earn a commission if you click on them or make a purchase through them. Rest assured, the price you pay remains the same whether you use the affiliate link or go directly to the vendor’s website.
For your convenience, here’s a list of some of our popular affiliate partners: Amazon, Headway, Branden Drake, Mailerlite, Zach Spuckler, Liz Wilcox, ThriveCart, and SimplePractice. Details on affiliate partners can be found in my Disclaimers Page as well as Terms & Conditions.
While we may not have created these products, our opinions are entirely our own. We only recommend products we genuinely love and stand behind, hoping they will benefit you as much as they have benefited us. By using these affiliate links, you’re helping to support this website, and I sincerely appreciate it. Your support allows me to continue creating content like this.
Blogging for Beginners Q5: “How Long Does It Take to Make $1,000 Per Month Blogging?“
I hate to say “it depends,” but it really does. It depends on several factors, most importantly, how you’re generating income.
If you’re using affiliate marketing—for example, with Amazon—you can start getting paid fairly quickly since Amazon issues payouts once a month. However, the downside is that Amazon typically pays only pennies per purchase, so you need a large audience to generate a significant income.
If you’re looking for more consistent and substantial income, I highly recommend creating your own digital product or service, where you keep most of the profits. This is something I discuss with my coaching clients.
The type of product or service you offer will determine how quickly you reach your income goal. For example, if you have a $9/month membership like Liz Wilcox (affiliate link), you’ll need many more sales to hit $1,000 than if you offer a $3,000 coaching program.

Blogging for Beginners Q6: “How to Start a Blog for Free“
The best way to start a blog for free is to use a domain you already own or explore free options, such as Google Sites or the website included in your SimplePractice portfolio.
Even if you need to purchase a domain and hosting, the cost is minimal—about $12 per year for a domain name and as little as $5 per month for hosting. For roughly the price of a cup of coffee, you can start your blog.
Some people choose video blogging on YouTube instead, which is completely free. However, the downside is that you don’t own your YouTube channel—if YouTube goes down, so does all your content.
Blogging for Beginners Q7: Is a mental health blog profitable?
Short answer…yes, a mental health blog can definitely be profitable, but like any niche, success depends on how you approach it.
Blogging is a marketing tool, the goal is to use it to build SEO rankings and get more eyeballs on your therapy serviecs. The primary way your blog will get you money is by promoting your therapy offers: individual therapy, groups, intensivers, etc.
Many therapists also use blogging to promote their non-clinical side businesses such as courses, templates, and other digital products. In this arena, blogging can bring in many more options such as:
- Ad Revenue: Once you build a steady flow of traffic, you can monetize your blog through ad networks like Google AdSense or work directly with companies offering products and services related to your non clinical business.
- Affiliate Marketing: You can recommend products, books, courses, or therapy tools through affiliate links, earning a commission on sales made through your recommendations.
- Sponsored Posts: Companies in related industries (like wellness apps, therapy platforms, etc.) might be interested in paying for sponsored content to promote their services to your audience.
- Digital Products & Courses: Selling digital products, such as e-books, workbooks, or online courses, can be a lucrative way to generate income. Many readers may be interested in diving deeper into specific topics and willing to pay for valuable resources.
However, just like any business, the profitability of a mental health blog will depend on consistency, creating high-quality content, and a clear marketing strategy. Building an engaged audience through SEO, email marketing, and social media promotion is key to long-term success.
If you’re looking to turn your mental health blog into a profitable venture, focusing on both providing value and strategically monetizing through various channels is the way to go.
